Fernando Santos

Fernando Santos is a renowned football manager and a former player currently serving as a head coach for the Portugal national team. 

Fernando was born in Lisbon to his parents Francisco Santos and Maria de Lurdes Fernandes Santos. 

His mother sadly passed away at 83 on April 4, 2020, after a prolonged illness. He graduated in electrical and telecommunications engineering. 

Besides Portuguese, he also speaks English and Greek.

His career so far 

Fernando started his career with Benfica as a youth team player at 16. He made his senior debut with Estoril, with whom he later started his manager career after taking retirement at 33. 

He led Estoril to the top-tier in 1991 and went on spending a decade being in charge of Estrela da Amadora and Porto. 

With Porto, he won five major titles. In 2001, Fernando was appointed at AEK Athens, where he ended up winning the Greek Cup and losing the league on goal differences. 

He then joined Panathinaikos but left after four months on mutual consent. He lasted a season with Sporting Lisbon and then returned to AEK Athens, where he ended up leading the team to consecutive top-three finishes under his tenure. 

Just after a year with Benfica, he was sacked from the post. After spending three years in Greece with PAOK, he took the job at the Greece national team, qualifying the country to the EURO 2012 tournament, where the team was a success in reaching the last eight stages. 

Under him, Greece, for the first time, was able to reach the knock-out stage during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. 

He was appointed as a manager for Portugal national team on September 23, 2014. 

Under his charge, he led the team to the two major titles in the nation’s history, victory in the Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League.

He is married to his wife for more than four decades

Fernando is happily married to his wife of more than four decades, Guilhermina Santos. 

His spouse is the strong woman behind his success who has been accompanying him through thick and thin. 

The pair is still together, living a blissful life with no signs of divorce. The couple resides in Cascais.

When asked about the secret of their happy and long-lasting married life, Fernando’s simple answer was understanding. 

He said that he continues to look at his wife with the same passion as he used to. According to him, time brings more and better, cements the love of the beginning, and brings good things. 

Adding to this, his beloved spouse replied in one word, and that was trust. A long-lasting relationship relies on understanding and trust. 

From the beginning of their relationship, his spouse has been taking care of everything, and he has trust in her. 

The couple is the proud parents of their two children

From their union, the couple became the proud parents of their two children, daughter Catia Santos and a son Pedro. 

Their daughter Catia, 40, is working at Funchal as a judge in one of the civil courts, “Local Court of Instance of Funchal, District of Madeira." 

She has been serving as a judge for more than a decade. At first, she served as a judge in Oeiras and later in the court of Vila Vicosa, Alentejo.

Both of their children are happily married. The couple is seen vacationing with their children and grandchildren.
