Her parents are Jo Williams who is a drug treatment counselor and a concert pianist and James Perkins who is a farmer, businessman, and writer. She was brought up in Colrain, Massachusetts. Her parents split up in 1963.

She completed her schooling from Northfield Mount Hermon School which is an elite preparatory school. She graduated with a Certificate in Acting from Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University.
