Dr. Karamo Chilombo is an American medical doctor and musician, mainly famous as the father of American singer Jhene Aiko

He was born Gregory Wycliff Barnes. He is also known as Dr. Chill.

The reason he gave himself Chilombo

He gave himself the word Chilombo in his 20s.

Jhene released her album titled Chilombo in early 2020, and while explaining to Billboard news about her album, she said, initially, she didn’t feel connected with Chilombo

Still, as she grew older, she started searching for the meaning behind it and found out that it is a word in an African language that means “a Wild Beast” or “African Monster.”

She resonated with that because as she entered into womanhood, she felt extra confident and extra strong, and also that she had always been the beast.

She said there are lots of reasons behind naming the title “Chilombo,” and of the reasons is stepping into that confidence.

He divorced his first wife after two decades of marriage

Chilombo was married to Christina Yamamoto. Both Yamamoto and Chilombo are of mixed race. Yamamoto’s father is Japanese.

From their marriage union, they gave birth to five children, three girls and two boys.

They welcomed their first daughter Miyoko Aminah-Khalil Chilombo in 1981, and their second daughter Jamila Akiko Aba Chilombo, in 1983.

Their first son Jahi Chilombo was born in 1984, and their second son, Miyagi Hasani Ayo Chilombo, in 1986

Their youngest daughter Jhene was born in 1988. However, the couple is no longer together. They got divorced after two decades of marriage.

His son Miyagi Hasani died of cancer

Miyagi was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in 2010. He passed away two years later, on July 19, 2012, at the age of 26.

During an interview with People, Jhene opened up about her battle with her depression after losing her beloved brother, with whom she was super close, as her writing has always been her way of expressing herself and not feeling judged, just getting through difficult times.

She says when anyone holds anything in, that creates stress, and the pain disables you. She expressed how her grief almost disabled her.

She described herself to be an emotional and sensitive person and definitely has been in really dark moments

She went on to explain that she sometimes feels like she can’t even go outside because she will literally feel other person’s emotions.

She feels it to the point where she feels like she can’t move. And that is the reason she writes and makes music. She tries to turn it into art.

She also explained her late brother was the one to introduce her to new artists, books, and new ways of thinking.

According to her website, when her brother learned about his brain tumor, he turned himself to Buddhism.

He fought cancer for two years and was always in good spirits.

After the demise of her brother, she started taking trips, trying to escape any person, place, or thing that was too familiar.

And to process her grief, she said her project MAP (an acronym for movie, album, and poetry book) had helped her a lot.
