Donna McDaniel is the proud mother of NFL head coach Mike McDaniel. He is the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
Donna grew up on a farm in Eastern Colorado.
Her family ostracized her because of her decision to marry a Black man
Donna married a black man in her twenties but had to pay a heavy price for marrying a black man.
Mike, during a press conference, revealed that his parents experienced racism.
However, Mike has been extremely proud of being born biracial throughout his whole life and admitted not experiencing racism, but his parents did.
He didn’t know the reason why his friends were not allowed to stay at his home on multiple occasions until his mom told him.
According to him, he and his mom were ostracized because of his mom’s decision to marry a black man and her decision to have a baby with him, which he described to be eye-opening.
Mike says he thinks people identify him as something else, but he identifies himself as a human being.
How did she meet her future husband?
Donna found love once again in her life.
She married for the second time to her husband, Gary McCune, and it was her son who somewhat contributed to making it happen.
Mike, then nine years old, grew up as a Broncos fan and would spend hours waiting outside the training camps at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, hoping to take an autograph.
One day he lost his hat and came searching for the hat. Gary was working as an assistant video director at Broncos, and Mike approached him for help.
Gary said in an interview that he had never met such a polite guy as Mike, and he tried to help.
But the cap was never found, so Gary bought a new hat and gave it to Mike.
The next day Gary invited Mike and his family to watch the match and found that Donna was a single mom.
Gary said he eventually fell in love with Donna, but she initially was not that friendly and was sort of skeptical of him.
Three years later, Donna and Gary got married.
It was a double happiness for Donna as she found love once again and for Mike as he became a part of the Broncos family.
She is happy to have her son near him
Donna currently resides in the Village of Tall Trees and loves being there.
Donna is super happy with her son’s appointment as a head coach for Miami Dolphins as she gets to see her son more often as the distance between her son and her house is just four hours.
She expressed relishing the opportunity to be this close to him geographically.
Donna said she has visited her son and spent time with him in all those places where his coaching career took him, but there is nothing like having him at home with her.
Her son's journey from a ball boy to NFL head coach
After Mike became part of the Broncos family, he became a ball boy.
His work as a ball boy was appreciated by Mike Shanahan, and he was hired as a coaching intern in 2005 at Denver Broncos under head coach Mike Shanahan.
He got a fully paid job at Houston Texans as an offensive assistant under the head coach Gary Kubiak where he worked alongside three different offensive coordinators and future coaches, Troy Calhoun, Mike Sherman, and Kyle Shanahan.
He spent two years away from Kyle before he reunited with Kyle on the 15th of February 2011, getting hired back by Washington Redskins.
While at Redskins he worked with two other future head coaches, Sean McVay and Matt LaFleur.
He ended up being in the line room for two years and became the receiver coach, but once they got fired from the Redskins and went to Cleveland, Mike was only the guy Kyle took, so he coached the receivers and also did the run game.
He ended up doing the run game for Kyle from 2014 on.
He spent five seasons with the 49ers, especially as the run game coordinator, before he got hired by Miami Dolphins in February 2022 as their 14th head coach.
