Don Gummer

Don Gummer is the beloved husband of three times Oscar-winning American actress Meryl Streep. 

Besides being famous as a husband to Streep, Gummer is an award-winning sculptor. 

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, to his parents, Dorothy Ann(nee Jacobson) and William Adolph Gummer, Gummer grew up alongside his five brothers in Indiana. 

He completed both of his degrees, Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts, from Yale School of Art.

From soul healer to soul mate

Gummer came into the life of Streep when she was emotionally drained, losing her then-boyfriend John Cazale, who died of lung cancer in 1978. 

Streep and Cazale were in a committed relationship and were sharing an apartment in Tribeca, from which she was later kicked out following the death of Cazale. 

Gummer, who was friends with Streep’s brother Harry went to help her and later became her soul healer. 

When Gummer was out of the country for traveling, they kept in touch via letters. 

Initially, Streep was not ready to start a new relationship but ended up staying with Gummer after he returned from traveling. 

Six months later, on 30th of September, 1978, they were at the garden of Streep’s parents’ home exchanging their wedding vows. 

The couple has been married for over four decades and still going strong. They are the perfect example of ideal soulmates.

Father of four grown-up, independent children

Gummer is the father of four grown-ups, independent kids he shares with his wife of over four decades. 

According to Streep, Gummer was a very involved father and more relaxed when it came to raising their kids, while Streep was more of a tiger mom. 

She also stated not being guilty about taking off for several months for her work purpose because her husband did not let her feel so.

There was teamwork in parenting their four children and helping them grow into independent young people. 

All of their kids are in the entertainment world. Their only son Henry Wolfe who is a first-born in the family, is a musician.

Streep, in an interview, admitted to being lucky having found a great husband many years ago. 

She also said of finding the right man who never felt overshadowed by his famous partner as he was confident enough in his own identity. 

Streep once confessed to letting her husband read her script and only doing it if he liked. 

While accepting one of her Academy Awards in 2012, she expressed her gratitude in the form of a speech. 

She first thanked her husband, saying that thanking at the end of the speech would play him out of the music. 

She also wanted him to know that everything she values the most in their lives he has given to her.

In an interview, his daughter Grace said he is a great, wonderful, supportive dad and an amazing artist. She also admitted to love going to museums and sharing everything with him.

As per her, he never can lie even though they sometimes wished him to pretend.
