Dean Smith

Dean Smith is an English-born professional football manager who is currently the head coach of Premier League club Aston Villa. Dean was born to his parents, Ron and Hilary Smith. 

His father worked as a Steward at Villa Park for 25 years and was a life-long supporter of Aston Villa. 

Dean is a retired football player. He started his career playing as a defender with Walsall in 1989 and ended his playing career with Port Vale in 2005.

His journey from a lower league player to a premier league manager

Dean started his career journey playing for the lower league club. He was sold to a third division club Hereford United after having played for Walsall for five years, where he made 142 appearances. 

After years of struggles in the third division club Leyton Orient, he joined the first division club Sheffield Wednesday followed by League One club Port Vale. 

His coaching journey began with Leyton Orient working as a youth coach in 2005 and later as an assistant manager. 

In 2009, he joined his former club Walsall as a head of youth, followed by the role of caretaker manager and later as a permanent manager. 

Before joining Aston Villa in 2018, he served for Championship club Brentford finishing the 2017-18 season in ninth place. 

Under his management, Dean led the Villa to win the promotion to Premier League and further making the record in 67 years after a 7-2 victory over Premier League Champion Liverpool in the third game in the 2020-21 season. 

He is a married man 

Dean Smith is a married man. He is happily married to his wife Nicola, with whom he shares two beautiful children, a son and a daughter.

According to Dean, his wife gets too nervous watching his games and confessed to watching hardly six games as of 2020. 

It is their daughter who keeps her up to date about the games. Despite being a celebrity wife, Nicola lives a private life out of the spotlight.

His father did not know about his managing job at Aston Villa 

His father, Ron Smith, a life-long supporter of Aston Villa, sadly did not know about his managing job at Aston Villa because of illness. 

His father, who is no more in this world, had Dementia because of which he was unaware of his son's managing job. 

Ron Smith had been living in a care home before he contracted the Coronavirus in 2020, which claimed his life after battling with the virus for four weeks.  

Ron was 79 when he took his last breath on the 27th of May, 2020. At the opening of the new training centre of the club, Prince William paid a special tribute to the late Ron Smith and offered his serious condolence to the Smith family. 

He also paid tribute to Dean for his commitment and contribution to the club since 2018.

He has an older brother

Dean has a brother Dave who is two years older than him who is also a great Villa fan. The brothers grew up together. 

According to Dean, he spent his childhood playing against his brother and his friends. 

A chess champion

Dean is not only a manager but also an avid chess player. He was a West Midlands school chess champion. 

Dean grew up playing chess with his uncle, who would visit them every Christmas and holiday. 

Dean still plays chess these days and confessed to being more tactful in football because of that.
