David Wagner

David Wagner is a professional football manager and a retired player who is currently the Swiss Super League side Young Boys manager. 

He was born in Frankfurt to his Thai father and a German mother. Since his mother married an American-born step-father while she was pregnant with him, he spent his childhood in Los Angeles and also held American citizenship.

He had no desire to continue football after the end of his playing career

David, in an interview, confessed to not having a desire for continuity in football after the end of his playing career. 

He realized it when he was offered an assistant post directly after the end of the season at SV Darmstadt. He desired to learn something new and do something new. 

When he thought deeply about what he was longing for, an idea popped up in his mind and that was to become a teacher, which according to him, was a stable job with plenty of holidays and loads of spare time. 

So with that idea in his mind, he got training and became a sports and biology teacher. He was loving his job because there was no one to tell him what to do and what not to like in professional soccer. 

For two to three years, he sidelined soccer and kept a distance. But slowly and gradually, the passion for football came back in him. 

Along with his degree at the end of 2007, he also became a certified coach. Since he already had a coaching certificate, he thought of getting back as a coach.

Met his future wife at Mainz

David has been married to his wife for a very long time. He first met his future spouse at Mainz. From their union, the couple became the parents of their two beautiful children, Lea and Lynn. 

His spouse and two daughters have been the supporting figure during his highs and lows. The couple celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in 2019.

His eldest daughter is a journalist and sports presenter

His eldest 27-year-old daughter, Lea, is a journalist and a sports presenter. She works as a sports presenter for SWR, a public regional broadcasting company. 

She recently has been appointed as a presenter for “Sportschau.” She is currently in a relationship with her boyfriend, Yannick. They have been residing in Stuttgart.

He and Klopp are best friends

David and  Jurgen Klopp have known each other for a very long time. For David, Klopp is still  the same old friend today though he is the head coach of the top club Liverpool. 

His relationship with him is still the same. Klopp has been an important and influential part of his professional and personal life. 

According to him, he has known Klopp longer time than he has known his wife. They met at Mainz, where David took over his place in the team, and Klopp switched his role to a defender from a striker. 

David credits Klopp for giving all his football knowledge to him. Klopp is also the godfather of his second daughter Lynn.

David had a stunning playing career. He enjoyed the most success during his four years period with Mainz, where he scored 19 times for the club. 

He won eight caps for the United States national team.  As a manager, he has managed Borussia Dortmund II, Huddersfield Town, Schalke 04 before Young Boys.
