On May 6, 1986, Sally was informed by her friend that her mother, Xara Terrell Quillian, had called and that her father John Kelley Quillian, then 56 is no more. 

She knew that it wasn't a car accident, a heart attack, or other accidental death, but her father took his life. He was struggling with depression for several years. 

As per Sally, her entire family urged him to get professional help, but he was worried about the stigma associated with psychological treatment. 

He used to see his depression as a sign of weakness rather than illness as the general public did not consider depression as a disease as the medical professional does.
