Christopher Nkunku

Christopher Nkunku is a French-born professional footballer who plays for Bundesliga club RB Leipzig and the France national team as a midfielder. 

Nkunku was born in Lagny-sur-Marne to Congolese parents.

The football journey of Nkunku to date

Football is the sport of Nkunku's family. He grew up watching his father and older brother play football, which was how he got into football. 

Whenever he misbehaved, his father would tell him he could go to school but not to training which helped young Nkunku to work on it from the right age.

He was just six years old when he started playing football with AS Marolles. 

With a dream of playing for a big club, he gave a trial with Lens, Le Havre, and Monaco but all three of them turned him down because of being too young and light. 

At 12, he joined Fontainebleau youth academy. 

The following year, he joined Paris Saint-Germain's academy, where he soon excelled and was accepted at the youth sides of INF Clairefontaine at the U-15 level. 

His former youth coach at PSG, Cedric Cattenoy, said he was a late developer, and though he was small he was talented.

After his two successful years at Clairefontaine, Nkunku was promoted to PSG's B team, where he excelled under the youth coach Francois Rodrigues. 

Rodrigues said Nkunku was a boy who, even then, was incredibly talented despite being slight and small physically.

Nkunku made his senior debut at the age of 18 in December 2015. 

In 2016 with the arrival of Unai Emery, his opportunities were limited, but he managed to score in 2017 against Lorient.

He scored 11 goals out of his 78 games while at PSG before he swapped for RB Leipzig in 2019. 

Nkunku said he chose Leipzig back then because it was the best project. 

In September 2021, he became the first player in the club's history to score a hat-trick in the Champions League after scoring a hat-trick for Leipzig in their 6-3 loss to Manchester City in the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League group stage match. 

Racking up 20 goals and assisting 13 goals in 34 league games earned him the 2021-22 Bundesliga player of the season award.

Being nominated for the French national team was a dream come true for Nkunku

Nkunku had been waiting for his first call-up to the French national team. 

During an interview in 2021, Nkunku said he had had no contact with France national team coach Didier Deschamps until then. 

He had also said the coach couldn't look past him if he continued to play like that. As he said, his stunning performance led him to his dream come true. 

He was nominated for the first time in March. 

Nkunku said he was at his home with his family when he saw his nomination on the television, and everyone was happy. It was a dream come true for him. 

He played for the first time for the senior France squad against Ivory Coast on the 25th of March, 2022, and South Africa on the 29th of March, 2022.

His philosophy

To play like a kid and enjoy football has always been the case for Nkunku, and he has the same mindset he had when he was six, eight, or ten years old.

Every time Nkunku is on the pitch, he tries to take pleasure in the game and ensure supporters leave the stadium with happy faces.

Nkunku was raised alongside his two siblings. It was his older brother who motivated him to work hard and continue to improve throughout his early career.
