Carola Pucci

Carola Pucci is famous for being a spouse to professional football manager Manuel Pellegrini, the current manager of Real Betis. 

As a former player, he played as a centre-back for Universidad de Chile throughout his playing career and represented Chile in international competitions. 

A Chile native, Carola is a civil engineer and a technical director of the energy sector company “The Gasco Company.”

Married for over two decades 

Carola and Manuel have been happily married couples for more than two decades.

The Saturday night of 1st of June, 2018, might be Carola’s unforgettable terrifying experience of her life. It was the night when she got robbed at gunpoint. 

Carola, along with her spouse, was heading towards the restaurant in Santiago, Chile, to have a meal with their friends.

About 40 meters from the parking area, the two men with their faces covered in masks got out of the stolen Porsche Cayenne and jumped straight to her in an attempt to grab her handbag, keeping her at gunpoint. 

Her husband immediately reacted, throwing himself over the thief that made him stop but then the man moved towards her husband, pushing the gun on him but instead fired the gun in the air. 

According to Manuel, the changed decision of the man to fire the gun in the air was maybe because the police were running towards him or maybe the other man asked him not to, or maybe the man recognized him.

What motivated her spouse to shift his goal from engineering to coaching?

To pursue a career in coaching was not her spouse’s goal initially. Becoming professional soccer was his goal, but he also wanted to combine it with a career. 

He opted for medicine but was not achieved, so he studied engineering. He had already made up his mind to give his full percent to construction after his playing career since he had already become an engineer and set up his construction company. 

His career took a different turn after he met his then Universidad de Chile manager Fernando Riera, under whom he spent five years. In those five years, his manager instilled the vocation that motivated him to shift to coaching. 

He was not afraid to take the risk because football was something he loved. He took engineering along with his managing career until 1994, when he decided to dedicate his full time to football.

Manuel has coached 15 clubs based in Spain, England, Argentine, Chile, China, and Ecuador, including Real Betis in his more than two decades of a coaching career. 

Under his management, he has led the team to win Copa Chile, Copa Interamericana, Serie A, Primera Division, Copa Mercosur, Premier League, and Football League Cup.
