Ben Chilwell

Ben Chilwell is an English-born professional footballer who plays for premier league club Chelsea and the England national team as a left-back. 

Chilwell was born to his parents, who migrated from New Zealand to England in 1993.

His back story behind his success

Chilwell is today one of the top defenders of Chelsea, but it was not an overnight success. 

While at school, Chilwell was a fan of almost every sport, including cricket, rugby, and football. 

He excelled in cricket than football initially, but his love for football carried him to pursue his career in football. 

He was playing men’s cricket at the age of 14 along with football. 

His youth career began with Rushden & Diamonds and later Leicester City. 

While he was playing against Chelsea at Cobham on a trial period at Leicester City, the team’s left-back got injured, due to which he was put to fill his space which continued to rest of his six-week trial. 

Since midfield was the position he preferred, he only started left-back after he got a scholarship; otherwise, he was always seeking the chance to play as a midfielder. 

While he was in the Academy system, he struggled to get the scholarship. 

The unsuccessful years and inability to get into the senior squad made him realize that only talent can lead him to fulfill his dream and save him from being released from Under-15.  

He started putting extra effort into going to the park regularly for two hours, and the result of his hard work was seen when he became the captain of Under-16.

He made his senior debut on the 27th of October 2015 and was loaned to Huddersfield Town in 2016. 

He signed the contract with Chelsea on the 26th of August 2020. 

At Chelsea, he has contributed to the team to lift the UEFA champions league title in the 2020-21 season, UEFA Super Cup title in 2021, and FA Cup runner-up title in the 2020-21 season so far.

His father is his hero and is grateful for his belief in him

When Chilwell was struggling to get the scholarship, not only he but his father was also struggling at the same time. 

He used to drive him back and forth every day to the training center from their home outside Milton Keynes for months and months because his name was never read on the side that would be starting on the weekend. 

As a father, he saw the spark in him to become a great footballer and would continuously motivate him to work hard further, which would often make Chilwell question what his father saw in him. 

It may be because he knows what it takes to give up upon the dream. 

He was a good tennis player while he was in New Zealand, but he could not chase his dream because he had the responsibility to look after his family. 

The belief of his parents in him and his football eventually made him realize what he was capable of and channeled the energy his father had into his work.  The rest is history.

His mental health was affected during the first lockdown

Chilwell confessed how his mental health was affected during the first lockdown. 

He was struggling to deal with his mental health, occupied with low confidence that was affecting him every single day. 

He also missed the last 2019-20 campaign while at Leicester City because of his heel injury.

For a few months, he kept himself away from everyone, not communicating with anyone before eventually speaking out his mental health to someone, which helped him a lot in the process. 

In his tweet, he shared how he dealt with his mental health through sharing and advised people dealing with the same problem to share their problems with friends, family, or someone confidential, which acts as a solution and makes them feel they could not have felt before.

During the second lockdown, he shared how he kept himself engaged and connected with his loved ones. 

According to him, he utilized the time playing online chess with his mate. 

He made sure that his loved ones were ok making a call to them as much as possible and asking them what they were up to.

He was dating former Love Island star 

Chilwell was previously in a relationship with former Love Island star Joanna Chimonides. 

The couple was spotted in the restaurant quite often, and the rumor was circulated before they officially started dating. 

The pair fell for each other while Chilwell was playing for Leicester City and Chimonides was studying psychology at the University of Leicester. 

They ended their relationship in 2018, and the reason behind their breakup was Chilwell’s desire to stay single for a while. 

Though they broke up a year before, when his ex-girlfriend entered into Love Island Villa, Chilwell was not happy with her decision to enter the Villa.

He is currently single

Chilwell is currently single and is not dating anyone these days.
