Andrew Redmayne is an Australian-born professional soccer player who plays as a goalkeeper for Sydney FC in the A-League and the Australia men’s national team.
Happily married to the love of his life
Redmayne is happily married to the love of his life Caitlin whom he dated for several years before getting married on the 18th of June, 2018.
The couple shares a beautiful daughter named Poppy. The couple recently bought their new home.
His wife gushed about him, saying she is proud of him because of the person he has become growing entirely.
She said Redmayne has confidence about him that she has never seen before.
His penalty save led Australia to qualify for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar
Redmayne became a national hero after he saved a penalty in the World Cup qualifying round against Peru in June.
He was called up off the bench as a substitute goalkeeper replacing Brighton’s Mathew Ryan in the 121st minute.
Redmayne's tactics of dancing across his goal-line, and moving from side to side to distract the opposition on every penalty shoot-out, helped his team secure their post in World Cup.
Redmayne recalled getting a call from the national goalkeeping coach, John Crawley, who, before ending the call, said,
“Get ready to save a penalty to send us to the World Cup.”
While appearing on the Today Show Australia, he talked about the moment calling to be surreal.
He said for him, it’s a weird position to be in as he has only played such a small role in what was a four-year campaign.
He also said that he seems to be getting all the attention which doesn’t suit him well, but he is happy to play a small role.
He almost considered giving up on football from self-doubt
Redmayne even gave a trial for Arsenal when he was playing youth football with both the New South Wales Institute of Sports and the Australian Institute of sport.
He got an initial offer from the London club.
Still, later they opted to withdraw the offer and signed Wojciech Szczesny instead, after which Redmayne joined his hometown club, the Central Coast Mariners as a reserve keeper.
In 2016, when he was playing for Western Sydney Wanderers with self-doubt, he said it was all eyes on them and that he didn’t think he dealt with the pressure or the attention of playing with as many eyes on the club.
And also he faced criticism as well which led him to self-doubt.
Knowing that there is so much criticism and doubt about yourself is tough, he said in an interview.
It was just a bit too much for him. It was during that period when he fell out of love with the sport and was done with it.
He and his wife considered focusing on university studies and becoming primary teachers.
He had also completed a Barista course, ready to retire to work at a friend’s café at the age of 27 before Sydney FC signed him up.
He added that all he needed was an arm around him, and Sydney FC's change room was and is still one of the best rooms he has ever been part of because it’s so comforting and nurturing.
He rediscovered his passion for football.
