Alejandra Amarilla

Alejandra Amarilla is a Paraguayan-born American filmmaker, philanthropist, and activist mainly recognized as an ex-wife of a professional basketball coach, Steve Nash. 

Former player Nash is currently the head coach of Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Amarilla's father worked for the United Nations.

When did she first meet her future husband?

Amarilla met Nash in Manhattan in 2001. Nash, at the time, was playing for the Dallas Mavericks. 

The couple started dating and, in October 2004, became parents for the first time, welcoming their twin daughters Lola Nash and Bella Nash. 

The following year in June 2005, they walked down the aisle. But in 2010, Nash announced their separation.

They were on the verge of separation during her third pregnancy 

Amarilla and Nash's beautiful marriage began to fall apart during the time of her third pregnancy and eventually came to an end after the birth of their born son Matteo Joel Nash in 2010. 

The happy and sad news came at the same time when Nash announced the birth of their son along with the announcement of their divorce, which came as shocking news to everyone. 

Nash, in an interview, revealed separating from Amarilla through most of her pregnancy. 

Nash doubted her assuming his son Matteo was not his but Suns teammate Jason Richardson as there had been rumors of her link-ups with Jason.

When asked about the toughest and the best part of a newborn in the family, she said the toughest part of having a newborn after six years was getting back to diapers when you forget how much work it is to have a newborn. 

At the same time, she confessed to wanting a son after having two girls, and they planned Matteo for an entire year. 

The best part was watching her daughters' love for their brothers trying to become good sisters.

Talking about their failed marriage, she said of having ups and downs like every other marriage, and its challenges could be somewhat more demanding. 

She concluded by saying that she was grateful for the life she shared with Nash, with whom she shared three beautiful kids, and wished him all the best.

The Ugly custody battle 

The ex-couple went through a lengthy and ugly custody battle following the divorce. 

Amarilla's request for child support was denied by an Arizona judge in 2011, giving the reason that her income was equivalent to Nash's income. 

In his defense, Nash had also stated that he had paid enough money in divorce settlement which does not require him to pay for the child support. 

In 2012, she intended to raise her three kids in California and wanted to move from Arizona, to which then Laker's player Nash protested, claiming that Los Angeles was not suitable for raising children and her move to California was to increase her money in child support. 

The ex-couple settled their differences later, with Nash agreeing to pay 90% of the medical, educational, and extra-curricular activity expenses and 82% of the nanny's salary.

After the lengthy custody battle, her ex-husband moved on with his life marrying volleyball player Lilla Frederick in 2017 in a romantic wedding ceremony in Manhattan Beach, California, after she said yes to his proposal during a vacation in Majorca in 2016.
