Yunus Musah

Yunus Musah is an American-born professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for La Liga club Valencia. 

Even though he was born in America to Ghanaian parents, Musha plays for the United States national team.

Early childhood

Musah’s father traveled to Italy from Ghana for a better future for his family. 

His mom was pregnant and was at her brother’s place in the Bronx when she gave birth to him. 

They went to Italy after a couple of months. Musah had been into football since the age of five. 

He joined local Giorgione Calcio 2000 at the age of six while they were residing in Castelfranco Veneto, a town in Northern Italy.

While in Italy, he supported Juventus. At nine, the family moved to London. 

He went to Sunday League club, trained with them, and played three games before he joined Arsenal’s academy.

He was eligible to choose among Ghana, America, England, and Italy

Musah was eligible to choose among Ghana, America, and Italy but chose to represent his birth country. 

While stating the reason behind his decision, he said it’s a pride to go to the United States team as well, as it is a group he loves to be with, a team who wants to achieve many things. 

Before officially committing to the United States in March 2021, Musah made his international debut with England’s under-15s and eventually represented England’s under-18 level. 

Musah represented the US at the senior level. 

However, despite that, England’s senior manager Gareth Southgate revealed he would still try to convince Musah to commit to the England team in the long run, stating they would very much like his future to be with them. 

Musah, during an interview with ESPN, said the decision was hard to make as England has done so much for him.

When someone’s nice to you, you don’t want to sort of leave them upside down. But in the end, you have to make the best decision for yourself, he added. 

However, the USMNT was able to convince Musah to make an effort by continuously making contact with him and his family. 

Musah said he was convinced after the first camp after he spoke to head coach Gregg Berhalter and his assistant Nico Estevez and felt extremely welcomed by the USMT setup and thought it was the best decision of his career.

Musah will be represented the United States in FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. 

Playing in the World Cup has been his biggest dream since making his professional debut. The lock screen picture on his phone is of a World Cup trophy.

Musah says his parents made a lot of sacrifices along the way. 

He told his family, coming from Ghana, not from the wealthiest parts, still did their best to change their lives, going around Italy, America, and England all to provide him and his brothers a better life. 

According to him, his family was very strict with him not falling into the bad influence, which helped him to stay focused. 

After finishing school, he would go home straight and go to training and would train. 

He was so determined to become a professional player that he was ready to do whatever it would take. 

Musah says he is very grateful for everything and the values they taught him. He tries to implement them in his life as well as in football.

When asked about his hidden talent, he said he is a good cook. According to him, he can make anything in the kitchen. 

He is especially good at making chicken fries or chicken drumsticks. He also can make mac and cheese. He says he loves to eat and usually eats seven times a day.

Musah has a cat. He has named the cat after his birthplace. His cat's name is Bronx because he was born in the Bronx. It reminds him of the place he was born.

Musah says he is a very religious person and always goes back to thank God for everything that has happened.
