Life And Education

Alvaro Cervera is a Spanish football manager and a former player who is the current manager of Cadiz CF.

As a former player, he played as a winger for top-flight clubs like Valencia, RCD Mallorca, Racing Santander, and the Spain national team, where he earned four caps for Spain.

Born in Santa Isabel, Spanish Guinea, Cervera spent his childhood in the Canary Islands and youth in Cantabria.

The turning point

Following the injury that led to surgery left Cervera on the verge of quitting football forever with no desire to play after enduring tough times as a player.

But his life took a turning point after he met Jose Luis Oltra, whom he describes as a true coach by vocation.

His coaching career began following in the footsteps of Jose, taking on the teams which Jose had left behind like Catarroja, Castellon, and later Tenerife.

The vocation Jose had for coaching was not in Cervera initially but realized only after trying.

He went on accumulating experiences working with every division, which helped him in personal growth and development.

In the process, he mostly coached in Segunda Division. He had a short stint at Racing Santander in the top tier before taking over Tenerife.

In his three seasons at Tenerife, he led the team to win the promotion to the second division.

He was appointed by Cadiz CF in 2016. At the time of his arrival, the club was then in Segunda Division B.

With only four matches to go until the end of the season, he led the team to win promotion to Segunda Division.

The team was further qualified for the play-offs for top-flight promotion in the following season, but the team lost on regulation. The promotion was again achieved in 2020.

What other sports does he play besides football?

Cervera plays golf besides football though he confessed to not seeing it competitive and to not attracting attention.

According to him, getting closer to golf gives the feeling of tranquility, and besides that, football and golf are completely different.

In football, the team competes against the opponent team, whereas in golf, the competition is within oneself with no one to beat except the field.

His take on criticisms

Cervera does not like to give much attention to criticisms as long as he is clear with what he wants from his team, both in the way of achieving results and the way to achieve them.

Even if anyone calls him defensive, he does not find anything wrong because he feels there is nothing wrong with being a coach who wants his team to have good defensive organization.

Cervera intends to keep improving and continue growing and wants his player to stay plugged in and dream of the best.

The start of the 2021-22 season was not effective as expected, where the team had two draws and two losses in 4 games.

Cervera was criticized for not having the right tactics and schemes and not taking advantage of the club’s resources.

Cadiz’s winger Salvi Sanchez came in support of him amid the criticisms.

He said Cervera was an ideal coach for the club who continued to bet on his way despite facing the tough time.

His hard work has paid off despite going through hard critics in the past, and he has been the head of the Cadiz being in the first division.

He also cleared that his coach is not going to change because of the criticisms. He has things very clear and will be sticking in his ideas till death.
